500 Servos opinions
« on: December 26, 2010, 04:29:46 AM »
I intend to put in an order today for the few more parts I need so I have everything to build up my 500 - so the question is Align DS510's or spring the extra money for DS510M's. Are the metal gear servos necessary or highly beneficial in the Align servos? I've looked through most of the servo options for the 500 and decided to just go with the Aligns for accuracy, power, reliability, ease of fit, etc...

I think it's a personal preference if you want to go with metal gear or not. Depend on your flying skill. If you're doing hard 3D, I think it's better to get the metal gear.
For your reference, T 500ESP comes with DS510.

510s are great, I run them on my 500.  Metal gear would be more durable.  You can go with a DS520 on the tail, or if you really want a rock solid tail, check on a DS650 and see if it will fit.  I am so happy with the birds I have the DS650 on the tail (most all my nitros).
I don't always fly a good gyro, but when I do, I prefer Vbar...Stay inverted my friends!

I'm not doing any 3D with it. I was thinking that I could always but the DS510's and if I strip a gear I could just buy the metal gear set when I replace the gears. They are the same specs, case, etc. so I may save myself some initial cost by just going with the composite gears. Any arguments for the metal gears from the get-go?

I already got the GP780/DS520 combo for the tail  :220:

Nope, you should be ok.  I don't run metal gears and have not lost a servo yet.  That is not a bad tail combo on your 500, but be warned that 500s can be very hard to get rid of all tail wag.  Hope you just luck out on the first go.

Well, we'll see how it goes and hopefully I don't have any issues. Need cyclic servos, receiver and battery and I'll be good to go. Going to put in an order now so I can get things shipped tomorrow.

I.D., Cyclic servos on a 500...many choices here..I have DS510's on one and Hitec HS-82MG's on the other. The both work well, but the Hitec's are quite a bit cheaper. Just my thoughts! :125:

Align DS510 for cyclic and Align DS520 on the tail is the way to go.

I also use the futuba GY401 gyro and my tail holds rock solid.

The servos do have plastic gears which I strip quite often but they are only about $6 to replace.

Cheers

401 is not bad on a 500 or larger.  I'm not a big fan of them on a 450.  They ok, but not as good as Align GP780 or 750.

The question did relate to a 500 Wayne not a 450.

:125: :125: I have the DS510's on my rex 500 and they work great and a futaba 9257on the tail. I had to turn gain down a bit but all seem to work good. :propeller: :propeller:

Infinite_Day,

I'm also running DS510's for cyclic,on my Trex 500, the work very well. I've been flying it for about a year with no problems at all.
On the tail servo, I have an Outrage 7654T with a Spartan DS760 Gyro. Another good combo, but a little pricey.

Yes, I realize this post is in regard to a 500, and that is why I said, I have had good experience with the 401 on 500 and larger helis.   :215:  I was just giving additional commentary that on 450 and smaller helis I have had less than desirable experience with the 401.  Different gyros seem to work better on different sized helis.

Thanks for all the input guys - all suggestions are always appreciated! I went ahead and ordered the DS510's along with a few other bits. Going to start tearing the head apart so I can check the main shaft and rebuild it if the shaft is true. Hoping that it is so I can proceed with the build without having to wait on a new shaft.

Chopper - I'd like to have an Outrage/Spartan level combo on the tail but I'm trying to keep the cost somewhat reasonable! I figured the Align tail set-up would be a pretty good option for quality/price ratio.
